![]() Green Tree Tip Line Autumn is the perfect time to begin winterizing your landscape. Follow these expert tips to ensure your trees stay healthy through the colder months. Deep Watering and Timing: While deep watering is crucial in the fall, avoid overwatering as temperatures drop, to prevent root rot. Complete your final deep watering before the ground freezes-typically a few weeks ahead of the first hard frost. Watering During Winter: Water trees when the temperature is above 40° F (4 °C). Evergreens, in particular, may benefit from occasional winter watering if the season is dry. Root Zone Mulching: Apply a 2–4-inch layer of mulch to insulate roots and retain moisture. Avoid any mulch near the trunk flare. Opt for mulch, straw, or compost, but avoid dense materials like rocks or pine needles, which can block water from penetrating the soil. |
